The Mystical Amboni Caves in Tanzania

The mystical amboni caves in Tanzania is 8 km in kiomoni village North of Tanga city in Tanzania along the Mombasa-Tanga highway. The cave is one of the supernatural formation on Earth and the biggest cave in East Africa. The caves were formed 150 million years ago during the Jurassic age.

By 20 million years ago, the area was under water and geography has a lot to explain regarding the formation of caves. The local people in the community associates its formation to be spiritual.

The caves has about 10 different chambers covering an area of about 234 km2. Only one cave is open for tourism while others are sacred to the spirits and the local community.

The biggest cave is Osale Otango and the first cave is “Mizumu Wa Mabuvu” meaning ghost of powers. The local people use it as a place for worshipping the gods and making sacrifices.

Some ethnic groups including the Segeju, Sambaa, Bondei and Digo tribe in Tanzania use the caves for prayers. Many people still visit the caves for rituals, believing that supernatural forces reside within the chambers.

Amboni limited, a sisal plantation company, acquired the area in 1892 and later did inform the British colonial government about the caves. In 1922, authorities declared the site a conservation area.

The government of Tanganyika officially handed over the caves to the department of Antiquities in 1963.
