East Africa a home to amazing species and landscapes that provide nature lovers with life-changing experiences. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, both created in 1991, are home to Uganda’s endangered mountain gorillas.
Together, Bwindi and Mgahinga, which span 331 and 33.7 square kilometers, are home to more than half of the 1,063 mountain gorillas that are still alive today. Ruhija, Rushaga, Buhoma, Nkuringo (Bwindi), and Ntebeko (Mgahinga) are the five places in Uganda where gorilla trekking is available.
Visitors can see about 21 habituated gorilla families, with a maximum of eight people per group. Access to these parks requires a valid gorilla permit, which costs UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, $800 for foreign non-residents, and $700 for foreign residents.
The Virunga Conservation Area’s Volcanoes National Park is home to mountain gorillas in Rwanda, another popular gorilla trekking location.
Trekking licenses are available through reputable travel operators or the Rwanda Development Board, and they cost $1,500.
