3days chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda Nyungwe National Park is one of the most famous tour packages that tourists highly enjoy while in Rwanda. Nyungwe forest is found in the south-eastern part of Rwanda and it is the largest montane forest in central Africa.
Nyungwe covers approximately 1,019 square kilometers of dense Afro montane forests, bamboo-covered slopes, grasslands, and wetlands. The park is home to over 1,100 plant species, 345 bird species, and 85 mammal species, including 13 primate species such as chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest monkeys.
Nyungwe feeds two of Africa’s largest rivers, the Congo and the Nile, and provides a significant portion of Rwanda’s fresh water. Nyungwe has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in September 19, 2023 due to its outstanding universal value and significant biological diversity.
One of the main attractions in the park is chimpanzee tracking and observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The park is also famous for its large troops of colobus monkeys and other primate species. There are 13 hiking trails covering over 130 kilometers, offering visitors a chance to explore the ancient rainforest and discover its diverse wildlife.

Day1: Arrival, city tour and transfer to Nyungwe National Park
On arrival, you will be picked by one of our experienced driver guides. After briefing, you will start with Kigali city tour. Visit Gisozi genocide war memorial site to learn about the 1994 Rwandan genocide which led to the death of about 500,000 Rwandans. Get to learn more about its history while at the place.
You will be able to visit king’s palace and the local market for some souvenirs. Have lunch break. Drive to the park. Reach the park and check into your lodge. Embark for the amazing canopy walk that takes you across the hanging platform built 50 meters above the ground and its 2oo meters long.
Enjoy the aerial view of the forest, spot some bird species and primates feeding in the forest, enjoy the beauty behaviour of the primates jumping from one tree to another. Go back to your lodge for dinner and relaxation.

Day2: Chimpanzee tracking
Have your early morning break fast at the lodge as you prepare for the amazing activity. Drive to Uwinka for the morning briefing where you will be able to meet other visitors. Start your trekking experience. There are two trails inside Nyungwe National Park. You will use the one the officials at the park will assign you. On way to see the chimpanzee, you will be able to meet other primates like the monkeys, baboons and different bird species. Enjoy every moment of your trekking and don’t forget to take enough photos for memories. After the trekking, walk back to the starting point, where you are going to meet your driver guide for a drive back to the lodge.
