Brief history
Nestled in the Bundibugyo District of Western Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Semuliki National Park offers a truly unique experience for nature enthusiasts. Established in October 1993. The park spans an area of 219 square kilometers (85 square miles) and is the only lowland tropical rainforest in East Africa. Forming an integral part of the Albertine Rift ecosystem.
Beyond its avian wonders, the park is home to a diverse array of wildlife. Such as elephants, hippos, leopards, and various primates, making it a fantastic destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
One of the park’s most striking features is the Sempaya Hot Springs, where the water reaches an astonishing 103°C (219°F). Hot enough to boil eggs on the spot. These hot springs are not just a natural marvel but also hold cultural significance for the local communities. The park is crisscrossed by the scenic Semuliki River, which supports a rich variety of aquatic life and adds to the park’s picturesque landscape.
Situated at an altitude ranging from 670 to 760 meters (2,200 to 2,490 feet) above sea level. Semuliki National Park offers numerous activities for visitors, including bird watching, hiking, and boat ride.

Semuliki National Park in Uganda is located in Bwamba County. A remote part of the Bundibugyo District in the Western Region of Uganda. The park was established in October 1993. It encompasses 219 km² of East Africa’s only lowland tropical rainforest.The park is 387 kms from Kampala.
Activities
Hot Springs Visit
Sempaya hot spring got its name from a Kiswahili word, ‘’sehemu mbaya.” meaning the difficult side. Since the constructors found it challenging to penetrate the existing rocks during the construction of Fort portal Bundibugyo road along the ridges of the Rwenzori mountains.

The Male Spring, known as Mumbuga. Is a hot, bubbling pool where the water shoots up to 2 meters high.The Female Spring is a boiling geyser with water that is slightly cooler but still too hot to touch.
One of the unique and fun activities is boiling eggs in the hot spring. Visitors can place eggs in the boiling water and watch them cook in a matter of minutes.The hot springs offers a great opportunity for photography enthusiasts to capture the stunning natural beauty and the steam rising from the boiling water.
Bird Watching

Hiking and Nature Walks
Explore the lush forest on the Kirumia Trail. A 13-kilometer (8.1-mile) route that takes you through the heart of the park. This trail offers a chance to see various wildlife and enjoy the scenic beauty of the forest.
Boat rides
Embark on a boat ride to see the park’s diverse wildlife, including elephants, hippos, leopards and Uganda Kobs. The park has about 9 primates, 336 plant species, 374 species of butterflies that the tourists are able to see some of them during the ride. Rides are available at different times of the day, including night drives to spot nocturnal animals.
There is a boat ride to specifically view the shoebill at the park that goes for $100 foreign non resident,$80 foreign resident and UGX 100,000 for East African citizen. The permit comes with an added advantage of viewing other animals while on the ride.
The prizes however are not constant, for a memorable trip it’s better to always check the prizes with UWA or a reputable tour company like Beyond sight safaris.
Cultural Encounters
Interact with the Batwa community, the traditional inhabitants of the park. They offer cultural performances, including music and dance. They showcase their traditional crafts like mats, baskets and clay pots.Cost Varies, but typically around $ 10-15 for a cultural performance.

The best activity to enjoy at Semuliki National Park in Uganda is exploring the Sempaya Hot Springs that is an amazing thing that I would recommend one not to miss most especially boiling eggs in both the male and female hot spring.The park is as well a birders haven which is extremely good for birders amidst other animals that can be found in the park.
