Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest savannah park in the country, located in western part of Uganda. The park is as well known as the whispers of the wild. It is a national park known for its diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife.

Lake Mburo National park spans approximately 370 square kilometers. The park is characterized by its rolling hills, acacia woodlands, savannahs, and five amazing lakes, including the centerpiece, Lake Mburo.

The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, impalas, buffaloes, ankole cows and several species of antelope.

It is also a haven for birdwatchers, boasting over 350 bird species. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities such as game drives, boat cruises, walking safaris, and bird watching. This makes Lake Mburo National Park a perfect destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Location

Lake Mburo National Park is located in the western region of Uganda, approximately 253 kilometers from Kampala, the capital city.

The park is situated in Kiruhura District, near the towns of Mbarara and Isingiro. This makes it one of the most accessible parks in Uganda.

The main entrance gates are Sanga and Nshara, both well-signposted and about a 20-minute drive from the park headquarters at Rwonyo.

Why  the  name Lake Mburo National Park

Mburo and Kigarama’s story

The name Lake Mburo National Park is derived from a local legend about two brothers, Kigarama and Mburo. They  lived in the savannahs of Karo Karungi.

According to the story, Kigarama had a dream that one day it would rain cats and dogs  causing floods that could destroy property.

He warned his brother Mburo, but Mburo didn’t take the dream seriously. When the heavy rains came, Mburo drowned. The area was named after him to honor his memory.

Though geography has another story regarding the formation of the lake which was due to down warping forming inclines and syncline .

Why does  it use whispers of the wild as its slogan

Lake Mburo National Park is called “Whispers of the Wild” because of the serene and peaceful atmosphere created by the sounds of nature. To talk of the rustling of leaves, the calls of birds, and the gentle flow of the wind through the trees and grasses.

These natural sounds evoke a sense of tranquility and connection to the wild, making visitors feel like they are part of the untamed beauty of the park.

Game Drives

Lake Mburo offers both morning or afternoon game drives, where you can spot a variety of wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, ankole cows,impalas, and more.

The diverse landscape offers excellent opportunities for photography and close encounters with animals.

Both morning and afternoon game drive provide a different perspective, experience and a chance to  see wildlife because their behaviors vary with time.

The park offers a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Mburo, where you can observe hippos, crocodiles, and a wide array of bird species. The cruise offers a unique perspective of the park and a chance to see wildlife along the waters’ edge.

Walking Safaris

Join a guided walking safari for an up-close and personal experience with nature. Accompanied by a ranger, you’ll explore the park on foot, learning about the flora and fauna and getting closer to wildlife than you would in a vehicle.

Bird Watching

With over 350 bird species recorded in the park, bird watchers will be in paradise. Look for the iconic African fish eagle, colorful kingfishers, herons, and the rare Shoebill stork, among many other birds. The park offers a very good birding spot.

Horseback Safaris

It costs UGX 70,000 an hour ride and UGX 110,000 for two hours ride.

Community Visits

Near Lake Mburo National Park, you can visit the Bahima community. During the visit, tourists can expect to see traditional Ankole longhorn cattle, learn about local dairy production, and participate in activities like milking cows and making traditional ghee.

You will also have the opportunity to engage with local women, learn about their customs and traditions, and explore the nearby Igongo Cultural Centre for a deeper insight into the region’s heritage

Mountain Biking

For the adventurous, mountain biking trails offer a fun way to explore the park’s terrain. Ride through the bush and enjoy the thrill of navigating the undulating landscapes while spotting wildlife.

Fishing

Fishing in Lake Mburo National Park is a popular and enjoyable activity for visitors. The lake is home to several fish species, including tilapia, catfish, and Nile perch.

The main designated fishing spots are at Mazinga, and visitors are advised to stay within these boundaries.

You will need to obtain a fishing permit from the park headquarters. The permit costs $15 for one day and $25 for four days, excluding park entrance fees.

 Visitors are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear, but it can also be rented from lodges or tour operators.The park is generally safe for fishing, but it’s important to be cautious of hippos and crocodiles in the area.

The fish caught can be prepared at your lodge for dinner or a campfire meal.
